The Supreme Court has set the stage for a new round of Senior Advocate designations, inviting eligible lawyers to step forward and stake their claim.
A formal notice, now available on the Court’s official portal, outlines the criteria and deadlines for submission. The move follows closely on the heels of newly revised norms governing the conferment of the coveted “Senior” gown.
Eligibility has been carefully defined. Advocates whose previous applications were not rejected by the Supreme Court or any High Court in the past two years may apply. Similarly, those whose requests were not deferred by any court within the last year are free to submit fresh applications.
The updated framework draws from the Court’s recent ruling in Jitender @ Kalla v. State of NCT of Delhi, which recalibrated the process and sought to bring greater clarity and structure to how Senior Advocates are designated.
With the revised guidelines now in place, the Court’s latest invitation signals the formal commencement of the 2026 designation cycle—an opportunity that many in the Bar will view as both professional recognition and a defining milestone.
